Symptom of Decadence

Is the U.S.’s fascination with subscription socks and underwear a symptom of decadence? My gut reaction is yes. These undergarments are meant to accomplish a specific task, namely providing some extra protection from chaffing and sweat in areas that are particularly prone to those problems.

Yet, with several subscription services focusing only on these garments, they are apparently becoming some sort of a fashion statement. An expensive one at that.

I think instead we ought to refocus our attention on ‘grown-up’ clothes. You know slacks that fit decently and don’t fall apart in the first wash, some pressed shirts with buttons. Almost anything above fancy underwear, colorful socks, flip-flops and sweatpants with holes in them or, if you’re high-class, yoga pants, with or without the holes. Active wear needs to return to being clothes for training, socks need to return to being covered in real shoes and I want no knowledge of anyone’s underwear.
